Detail

The existing site incorporated a detached bungalow with fantastic countryside views. The brief was for a replacement 4-bedroom house with large open plan living space, that seamlessly connected to the family garden and provided views across agricultural land.

Our clients always had a dream to undertake a self-build family home with traditional character but with contemporary ideas, form and function.

‘Spatial Design Architects’ were selected by our client after being disappointed with other architects attempts to create their dream home, after we had designed and detailed their close friends project in Billericay.

We undertook a feasibility study that incorporated key design ideas, detailed site analysis and an extensive pre-application process with the LPA to understand how the former architects failed to satisfy both the LPA and client’s requirements for the replacement dwelling. Once we met with the LPA we understood the planning considerations for the site, how the proposals would sit within the landscape and the limitations that incurred.

The objective of the scheme was to develop an, sustainable, classic aesthetic family home. A Design was developed further based on two pods that were differential in height and mass and that was interconnected by a frameless glazed link, that allowed the appearance of an original dwelling that was extended, that also allowed the mass to be separated and connected via the transparent glass form.

The proposed dwelling would be centred around the panoramic views over the metropolitan greenbelt, whilst a big emphasis has been drawn to sustainable materials and technologies to be used in the scheme, such as solar panels, ground source heat pumps, rainwater harvesting along with EV chargers, to create a ‘one-off’ high quality, sustainable family home, fit for the 21st century, the challenges of climate change and energy constraints we all find ourselves in today.

Spatial Design Architects have designed a contemporary family home and navigated the planning system to gain additional volume and height for the proposed replacement dwelling and have now submitted this beautiful family self-build home to the LPA for their support and approval of this forever home for our clients.
